Doing our part for the environment

I think we are all starting to realise how important it is to look after our environment. I feel like we are going back to a period of time before we become a throw away culture. Reusable coffee cups instead of throw away. Taking our own bags with us to the supermarket to do our shopping. These are all the things we are coming back to in order to help our environment and I think it’s great! I certainly don’t mind taking a few Pedlar Creative made shopping bags out with me to buy groceries. And I think that sewers and crafters can do their part by using up their scrap material or mending and repurposing old clothes. I want to do my part to help, so this week I’m very excited to be releasing my new Hanky Tutorial!

Some of you might remember a post from a couple of years ago when I made some hankies for my mum (if you missed it you can find the post here). Well I also made some for myself mainly to help the environment by using less tissues. And the added bonus is that now I can carry around some stylish hankies! I always remember the hankies my mum used to purchase – they were always boring and drab. But if you make your own you can use your favourite fabrics! It’s also a great way to utilise smaller pieces of scrap fabric. A win – win in my book!

The tutorial is super easy to follow and you can find it on my sewing tutorial page. It’s probably got more pictures than you need but I can’t seem to help myself. The example I use in the tutorial is the size of a regular man’s hanky but I’ve also given you cutting measurements for ladies. And I have also included an in between size that I prefer to use if I have enough fabric. I find it a much more useful size. The tutorial also teachers you how to make mitered corners which is a useful skill to learn. It’s used in a a lot of projects – particularly for making quilts.

I really hope you all enjoy my Hanky Tutorial and it inspires you to make your own. It’s great for the environment and they’re really useful. Particularly at the moment when tissue supplies are scarce. No need for boring hankies made out of ugly fabrics. It’s time to give the hanky a make over!
