I’m very much a coffee girl – there’s nothing better first thing in the morning! But towards evening it can be nice to sit down with a herbal tea. And because I can be a bit fussy (I’m not a huge fan of camomile or mint tea) I like to take some herbal tea with me when I travel. So it just made sense to make a pouch especially for it. Say hello to my Tea Time Pouch!
The Tea Time Pouch is a design that I came up with. I did have a bit of a search around to see if I could find a pattern for what I was after. But nothing really ticked all the boxes. So I decided to design my own.
There are pros and cons to designing your own pattern. Obviously it takes a lot more time to work out your measurements. And to make sure individual pattern pieces all work together. But one of the pros is you can design it to your exact specifications!
Since I have two favourite teas – I knew I wanted to make a pouch with two pockets. And because one of the teas is supplied unwrapped – I thought a zipper pocket would be a good option.
But it’s not an average zipper pocket. I’ve ironed-on some Pellon 875 Lamifix to the fabric. The effect is similar to an ironed on vinyl – giving a shiny gloss to the fabric. The only downside is it tends to make fabric look crinkled.
The reason I’ve used 875 Lamifix on the zipper pocket? Because it’s a food grade protective laminate. This makes it a handy interfacing to have on hand – particularly if you want to make food storage bags.
I am very pleased with how my Tea Time Pouch has turned out! It’s not too big but still able to carry a decent amount of tea bags. I have my loose tea bags secured in a zipper pocket. Whilst the individually wrapped tea bags have their own slip pocket.
The elastic closure turned out to be the best design decision I made. It’s easy to use, keeps everything secure and is able to expand to accommodate extra tea. But probably my favourite thing about my Tea Time Pouch is the fabric! It’s not only adorable, it’s the perfect depiction of what I keep inside!
