Hot Water Bottle Covers

For those cold winter nights

We’ve definitely started to hit the cold winter nights in Melbourne! 🥶 And I think there’s nothing better than a hot water bottle to keep you warm. I’m obviously not alone because there’s always a lack of availability this time of year. The only ones left had no covers. Luckily that’s not an issue – I’ll just make my own hot water bottle covers!

I already have a project for making hot water bottle covers. It’s from a craft magazine I used to buy called “Making Magazine”. I’ve made projects from it in the past, such as my Nan’s “Glam On The Go” pouch and the “Little Apron”.

Unfortunately they don’t publish this magazine anymore. It’s a real shame coz I found it very inspiring. But luckily the internet comes to the rescue with a range of free tutorials. I found this free tutorial by Cocowawa Crafts that’s very similar to the project I used.

Now, I mainly followed the instructions given by the designer. Although I did make a few tweaks 🤏. Like changing the recommended fabric from linen to cotton fleece. Because what is more cozy then fleece fabric?

But because I changed the fabric – I also decided to omit the canvas lining. Otherwise the cover became too bulky. And the hot water bottle didn’t feel very warm to me. But you might prefer a more gentle heat.

I also decided to substitute the snap and decorative button for some Velcro. It will work just as well for keeping my covers closed. And I just think a snap and button would be uncomfortable and possibly get quite hot. Plus I omitted the lace as it’s not really my style.

One other thing to note. I found the first one I made – using the pattern provided – ended up being slightly too small. So I made the next three with an extra 1/4“ added to the top.

I have to say I’m really happy with how my hot water bottle covers turned out! They feel nice and soft with the fleece fabric. The Velcro is also working out nicely too. This is a great project for beginners or if you’re after a quick make. But overall they will come in handy in those cold winter nights!
