Winter Scarf Tutorial

Winter Scarf Tutorial

Supplies:

  • 12” x 54” exterior fabric (fleece or wool)
  • 12” x 54” lining fabric (softy cuddle fleece or fleece)
  • 15cm x 1 or 2mm millinery elastic (or you could use a hair tie)
  • 1 x large decorative button
  • Matching thread

All seam allowances are 1/2” unless stated otherwise

Step 1

Baste the elastic to the right side of the exterior fabric in the top left hand corner. It should be placed about an inch in from the edge along the short side.

Step 2

Place lining and exterior fabrics right sides together (make sure the elastic tie is facing into the middle of the fabric and out of the way of your seam allowances – I’ve pinned mine to keep it out of the way).

Pin and sew around the entire outside leaving a 5” gap in one of the short sides for turning the correct way out. Because of all the layers of fabric I’ve used a walking foot, a larger needle (100/16) and a higher thread tension (7). I also used a longer stitch length at 3.5.

I’ve specifically left the gap in the end where the button will be sewn to make this step easier. Make sure you backstitch at the start and end.

Step 3

Cut off the corners and trim the seam allowance along all sides except for the side with the gap.

Winter Scarf Tutorial Step 3

Turn the scarf right way out. Use a poking tool (I use a chop stick) to poke out your corners.

Step 4

Sew the button in the top right hand corner – opposite to where the elastic is on the exterior side.

Step 5

Tuck the seam allowance of the gap inside and pin to close the gap. You now have a couple of options. You could top stitch around the entire scarf, or just topstitch along the two short ends, or hand stitch the gap closed. Because of the cuddly fleece I’ve hand stitched this scarf closed.

Your ready to go out in the cold winter night with your new scarf!

Optional: I’ve also made this scarf using a quilting cotton for the exterior fabric. Due to the size of most quilting cotton’s I’ve had to cut two pieces at 27.5” each and sew them together, right side’s matching. I’ve then ironed on a fusible fleece to give it some stability. This gives you a slightly stiffer scarf but you can use more decorative fabrics!
