A-Line Skirt

New addition to my Spring wardrobe

So this week I’m showing off one of the skirt’s that I made whilst on RMIT’s Sewing Intensive Course.

A-Line Skirt

This was the second project that we made for the week. It was definitely more difficult compared to the PJ pants as it involves more accurate measuring around the waist and hip and also more techniques such as installing a zip (invisible or standard). With this project we also had extra options like attaching a waist band, a facing or lining to the skirt. I decided to go for a waist band and clip but other people in the class made linings or facings for theirs. I also installed an invisible zip (for the first time!) which is definitely more tricky than a normal zip but I think after some practice it will get easier.

New Look Pattern #6843

The pattern we worked off was New Look #6843 and there are several different skirt styles included. For this skirt I used pattern D – which is the longer of the A-line skirts. Once again I found that trying to calculate my size based on the information given with the pattern was quite tricky. If you are a bit unsure, like me, when it comes to which pattern size to make it is always better to estimate larger as you can easily take it in with darts or a larger seam allowance.

The fabric I used is ‘Advanced Creations Mix Monotones Houndstooth’ and the colour is Grey & Black. I picked this up from my local Spotlight store (on sale!) and you might still be able to find it in their quilting fabric section. It’s quite a thin cotton so this skirt will have to be more of a spring/summer time wardrobe option.

A-Line Skirt

Since our class finished the first two projects early we had time to start another project. Some people made a matching PJ shirt to go with their pants but I decided to make a second skirt. I didn’t quite have time to finish it before the end of the course so there are still a few things I need to finish off at home before I can wear it (and show all you lovely people). I’m hoping it might be making an appearance in my next post!
