Learning something new!

I have to admit I’d never heard of sashiko before starting this project. Now I’m seeing it everywhere! Not sure if there has been a sudden trend or just that I now know what it is? Either way I’m hooked! And the Big Stitch Throw Pillow is the perfect project for sashiko beginners like me.

The Big Stitch Throw Pillow project is from Svetlana Sotak’s book ‘That Handmade Touch’. This is my all time favourite sewing book! I’ve already made a few projects, like the QAYG Zipper Pouch, Foldover Pouch and Catnip Fish. And there’s so many more I want to make. If you don’t have this sewing book already I can highly recommend!

Apart from the sashiko sewing supplies, the Big Stitch Throw Pillow requires minimal materials. Most of it I already had in my sewing room. I even managed to repurpose an old pillow to use as an insert. But I did have to purchase a small sashiko sewing kit. Not that I mind because I’ve got a feeling it will come in handy for future projects.

The project itself is fairly easy – particularly if you have made a few cushions before. The instructions are well written with plenty of photos. Probably the hardest part was the sashiko itself but that got easier the more I did. Like everything practice makes perfect and this is no exception.

One thing you will need is patience. It took me quite a lot of time to measure out all the different squares and transfer the markings onto fabric. I used masking tape to help keep the design central. And then comes the fun part! Hand stitching the design onto fabric. Give yourself plenty of time because you won’t want to rush.

I just love the end result! This Big Stitch Throw Pillow is a gift for a friend. But I’ll definitely be making another one for myself. It’s so stylish and unique! Plus I love most things Japanese inspired. I have to admit I didn’t think I’d enjoy sashiko as much as I did (I’m not a fan of hand-sewing). But I loved every minute. Looks like I’ve found a new hobby!
