Drawstring bags are probably the most common tutorials you’ll find on the net. The one I used to make these ‘Easy Drawstring Bags’ is by Purl Soho. If you haven’t checked out their website before I can highly recommend. It offers a range of free and paid tutorials including sewing, knitting, crochet, crafts etc. I’ve made quite a few of their projects – like the Railroad Tote. You can also buy your supplies directly from their site or source them yourself (like me).

The Easy Drawstring Bag tutorial, like the name suggests, is super easy. There’s very detailed instructions and plenty of pictures to follow. If you want to start making bags and unsure where to start? A drawstring bag is probably the best place.

Not all drawstring bag tutorials are the same. You can construct them in lots of different ways. Some have French seams, whilst others might be made with a gussets. Most are usually unlined but you can also make them with linings.

What I love about these bags is the gusset! This means you can fit more in them which is really handy (particularly when travelling). The only thing I’ve changed is how the inside raw edges are finished. Because these bags are unlined, and there’s no instructions on how to stop the fabric fraying, I’ve overlocked them.

I’m really happy with how these Easy Drawstring Bags have turned out. Plus I absolutely love the fabric! The caravan fabric makes them perfect for travelling. And the various sizes means you can make them for all the different types of clothes you pack. Since I made them all from the one fabric it can be confusing as to what’s in each one. I think I might add some embroidered labels when I get home. Ready for when the next holiday comes along!
