Makery Passport Case

Can you show me your passport please

As promised last week – this week I had a go at making the ‘Passport Case’ project from Kate Smith’s book ‘Makery’. This is the second project that I’m trying from the book and it didn’t go quite as well. Although this book has some great craft and sewing projects there are a few errors in the instructions. Particularly when it comes to measurements. I ended up having to make the passport case twice to be really happy with the end product.

So first I would like to make the disclaimer that Kate does provide instructions on how to measure your passport to make sure it will fit in the case. I decided to use the generic passport measurements that the project provides but I probably should have done my own. My passport did fit in the first case I made but I just wanted it to be a tighter fit so I ended up making the second version 1/2” smaller.

Another thing I found with this project is that the card slots are too small. I realised that my cards wouldn’t fit as I was constructing the pocket. So instead of finishing the card slots, I made a generic large pocket. I suggest using the measurements given in the Card Wallet project. This is what I did with my second version (as well as adding an extra slot). Another modification I made to the project the second time around was to make the lining piece larger. I found this covered up most of the exposed ‘wrong side’ of the fabric inside the pockets.

The end conclusion? In the future I’m going to be extra cautious with the measurements in this book. I think when I make the next project I’ll double check everything before I start. I haven’t given up on this book yet as it does have some great projects. Even if I wasn’t totally happy with the first passport case I made I do love the second one! The modifications all worked and I’m really happy with the result. I’ve got my passport ready to go!
