When you’re wrong – you’re wrong!

As many of you know – I’m a bit of a bag addict (😂)! But I’ve never owned or made a zipper pouch in this style before. I always thought it wouldn’t be very practical. And then I made my Pleated Pouch – and boy was I wrong!

Pleated Pouch

The ‘Pleated Pouch’ pattern is from my all time favourite sewing book – ‘That Handmade Touch’ by Svetlana Sotak. I’ve made quite a few projects from this book already and I’ve loved each one. Like the QAYG Zipper Pouch, the Big Stitch Throw Pillow and the Catnip Fish. They were all so much fun to make – it was only a matter of time before I tried another one.

The projects from That Handmade Touch aren’t rated for difficulty. So I would say it’s aimed at confident beginners. It’s got clear instructions with accompanying photos. If you are a visual learner like me (but also a newbie) you might struggle a little in some areas. Particularly when it comes to the pleats and binding.

The Pleated Pouch is constructed differently from most zipper pouches. To start with the zipper runs down the middle instead of along the top. It also uses pleats to create space and depth. And there’s the binding which I usually don’t like (always messy) But I actually found it easy to get a good finish.

As an added bonus the project includes instructions on how to customise your pouch. By adding a wristlet strap. I don’t know about you but I love a wristlet strap! So I’ll definitely have to make this version of the pattern.

As I mentioned in the intro; I never really thought this style pouch would be practical. I had images in my head of opening up the pouch and things falling out. But this is where I was so wrong! Instead I’ve found it to be a great design – particularly when it comes to finding things. You can usually see what you are after as soon as you open it. And nothing falls out. 😉

My only regret? Is that I didn’t make the Pleated Pouch sooner. This has fast become one of my favourite zipper pouches to use. I just love it! So yes – there’s definitely going to be more of these in the future. I’ve already picked out the fabrics for my next one!
