Hankies

An environmentally friendly way to go…

With our growing awareness of the environmental issues caused by our throw away society, we are changing our habits to be more environmentally friendly. The massive adoption of re-useable shopping bags and coffee cups are small ways people are making a change. My parents have always been very environmentally aware and re-used and recycled since I can remember! One re-usable item that I have always seen them use are hankies. They are not very common anymore, as most people prefer to use tissues. So for my mum’s birthday I decided to make her some!

Hankies

I did a bit of internet research and found that the common size for a woman’s hankie is about 8”x8”. So I found some pretty cotton fabrics and got started. Hankies are very easy to make as you just need to finish the edges of your material and you are done! How you finish the edges is completely up to you. I’ve finished these ones with a plain seam and mitred corners but you might want to add a trim or some lace?

I’ll put together a little sewing tutorial on how I made my hankies for you. Once it’s available I’ll let you know. I hope I’ve inspired you all to make some hankies of your own. It’s a great way to express your style through your accessories and also helps the environment!
